B2B PAID ADVERTISING
The Cost of Hiring the Wrong B2B Paid Advertising Consultant
“We need to talk ASAP. We thought we were saving money. Turns out, it cost us more. And now it’s a REAL f**king problem.”
That was the message I got from a Head of Marketing out of the blue. We jumped on a call soon after, seven months after our last conversation.
We had originally talked about me taking over their LinkedIn Ads and Google Ads. They are a B2B enterprise SaaS company with a decent chunk of budget behind the campaigns, and they needed someone to take charge.
We talked through the work, what they wanted to achieve and how I could help. Then we got to my fees. They felt I was too expensive. Fair enough. They decided to go with a cheaper freelance consultant instead. No hard feelings. I wished them well and left it there.
Seven months later, he got back in touch. Things were a bit hairy by then. He told me his job was on the line, and he needed to show the CEO and senior leadership that things were improving. The sales director was breathing down his neck every day.
The campaigns had been running and the budget had been spent, but the results were nowhere near where they needed to be. Nobody could give him a straight answer as to why. He did not know which campaigns were useful, where the budget was disappearing or whether the account was being managed properly. Not ideal.
Starting With an Audit
So we agreed to work together. I started with an audit of the existing campaigns and looked at:
- Targeting
- Campaign structure
- Budget allocation
- Conversion tracking
- Reporting
- How advertising data connected with sales outcomes
There were problems that should have been picked up months earlier. The account needed a tidy-up, the tracking needed fixing and the reporting was not giving him a straight answer.
Fixing the Account and Restoring Visibility
So I got stuck in. I fixed the tracking, reworked the campaign structure and cleaned up the reporting. We started seeing better performance, but more importantly, he could finally see where the budget was going and what needed attention.
The bit that stayed with me was what he said about the original decision. They had focused on what it would cost to hire someone. They had not thought about what it might cost to hire the wrong person. Those are two very different things.
The Cost of the Wrong Decision
When you are spending thousands on LinkedIn Ads or Google Ads, the management fee is only one part of the decision. The bigger cost can be months of wasted budget, poor lead quality and tracking that nobody trusts.
It can leave a marketing leader sitting in front of the CEO, trying to explain results they cannot properly explain.
A cheaper fee can look attractive when comparing proposals. To be fair, nobody wants to pay more than they need to. But the question I would ask is: “What happens if this person cannot get the account working properly?”
Price matters. So does the quality of the decisions being made with your budget. The cheapest option is not always the lowest-cost option.
“If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.”
That saying is blunt, but the underlying point matters. A paid advertising account needs more than someone who can make changes in a platform. It needs someone who can connect targeting, campaign structure, tracking, reporting and sales outcomes.
What to Check Before You Hire
Before choosing a consultant, look beyond the monthly fee. Ask how they will audit the account, how they will judge lead quality, how they will connect advertising data with sales feedback and how they will explain what needs to change.
You are not only paying for campaign management. You are trusting someone with the budget, the data and the explanation you will need to give internally.

Questions B2B Marketing Leaders Ask
How do you improve paid advertising performance?
Start with an audit of targeting, campaign structure, budget allocation, conversion tracking, landing pages and sales feedback. Fix the highest-impact problems before scaling activity.
Why can a campaign generate leads without qualified pipeline?
Lead volume does not show whether the right companies are entering the sales process. Lead quality and sales acceptance need to be connected to campaign reporting.
Who is this work for?
This work is for established B2B SaaS and enterprise technology companies with an active advertising budget and pressure to generate qualified opportunities.
